On 11-12-24, at 5:30PM, Sgt. Schveiger with Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, presented a scam awareness program to the citizens of Elgin IA at the Elgin Library. This class is part of a new program developed in 2024 called Invest and Prevent. Sgt. Schveiger spoke about some of the current scams occurring, how to handle them, and the steps to take to keep your information and money safe during this holiday season. Our goal at Fayette County Sheriff’s Office is to equip all generations with the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves and thrive in a rapidly changing world.
A Few Reminders this Holiday Season:
- Protect Your Personal Information: Don’t give out personal information such as; name, date of birth, social security number, banking information, and passwords.
- Ask Questions: Verify who you are speaking to. Ask for their name and company, and a supervisor if need be.
- If Something is to Good to be True: It may be a scam. Ask Questions, do research, and talk to a trusted family member.
- Sign up for Fraud Alerts with your banking institution: Credit cards and cash are safer forms of payment.
- If Something Doesn’t Feel Right, It’s Probably Not: Talk to a family member, friend, or spouse before you make a decision.
