The latest News on the Fayette County D.A.R.E. Program....

D.A.R.E stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.  This 10 week program is a cooperative effort between the Sheriff's Office, the community, and the schools, to work towards keeping our children drug free.  Currently the Fayette County D.A.R.E. Officer is  Deputy Chris Schvieger whose main objective is instructing our youth every year on the dangers of drug abuse and the consequences of bad behavior.

Once a week Deputy Schveiger will visit the schools and teach such topics as ways to say no, response styles, and how to conduct themselves in an assertive manner.  It is also our goal to educate students to stay away from violence. Another goal that we have is to break down the barrier that law enforcement sometimes has with youth.  We want them to see that Police Officers are only human, but with many responsibilities.

Deputy Schveiger is responsible for teaching North Fayette, Valley, and West Central Schools.  After all three schools have gone through their lessons, the students will pledge their promise to stay drug and violence free at the graduation culmination.  This ceremony will take place in the spring and is yet to be determined where it will be held.

These students should be very proud of themselves for completing a program such as D.A.R.E.

Due to the tight budget years, the D.A.R.E. program has to run strictly off of donations from the community.  Many businesses have given generous donations to help support the D.A.R.E program and make it possible for students to benefit from this valuable learning experience the D.A.R.E. program offers. Anyone wishing to donate time or funds to the D.A.R.E. Program is urged to contact Deputy Schveiger at the Fayette County Sheriff's Office for more information.  All donations are welcomed and anything that is received is strictly used for materials for the students.
